Luma Comfort HC12B Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier

The Luma Comfort HC12B Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier  is an elegant and quiet way of adding moisture to any room of your home.  Check out the video for an overview of the HC12B Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier from Air-n-Water.

My son has many allergy problems.  His sinuses are constantly plugged and irritated and he is always complaining of a dry itchy nose.  I received this humidifier for the sole purpose of using it in his room.  I love that it’s really quiet and really easy to use.  Everything comes in the box, there is no need to worry about purchasing extra cartridges and things.  It’s truly a “plug-n-play” device.  I am not going to say that this humidifier was the end-all of his allergies, because of course, that isn’t the case.  However, it does help with humidifying his room sufficiently so that he doesn’t wake up with dried out sinuses, eliminating a lot of discomfort and congestion related to dry sinuses (which would include, but not limited to itchy nose and throat, gagging and dry eye).  Basically, it helps make his mornings a little brighter – which makes everything better – including school.

The Sleek minimalistic design of the Luma comfort HC12B Cool Mist Humidifier allows it to sit in the background of any room – whether it be used for formal entertaining, a library, a play room or a child’s bedroom.  No matter the situation, it is quiet and unobtrusive and will humidify a room as large as 650 Sq. Ft.  Easy adaptability allows for a tall, a medium or a small look – which further enables it to fit to any type of room.  Just store the excess hardware in a safe location, and you can move it room to room when necessary.  The unit comes in two colors, black and white.

In addition, the level of cool mist is adaptable.  You turn it up or down simply on the front by holding the indicator button.  The musical chimes and indicator light (Will chime up a scale, and the light turns progressively from blue to white) to tell you how much of a mist stream is being released.  So, you can adapt the stream to the size and dryness of the room.

The humidifier is so easy to use.  There is only one button.  Press once to turn on and turn off.  The indicator light will shine blue when its ready.  When the indicator light flashes red, it’s time to add more water.  When the water levels are critically low, the indicator light will shine red, and the humidifier will shut-down – inhibiting drying-out of the cartridge (which will decrease it’s life) and the burning-out of the motor.  If the humidifier is operated on its lowest setting, one tank of water will last 46-48 hours.  Of course a lot depends upon the size and dryness of the room.

The Luma Comfort Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier comes with a demineralization cartridge, which allows the use of any type of water.  To prolong the life of the cartridge, it’s recommended that distilled water is used.  However, we just used tap water, and it worked perfectly fine.  Just a note, the higher mineralization of the water will shorten the life of the cartridge.  Typically, with soft water, and using it on the lowest setting, one cartridge will last about year.  It’s important to clean-out the humidifier at least once a month.

The humidifier also comes with a remote control that works up to 65 feet.  It’s a single push button remote control where you can power the unit and turn up or turn down the cool mist.

Notes about the Luma Comfort HC12B Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier

  • The adaptability is one of the best points of this humidifier.  However, with adaptability comes pieces that you have to safely store.  If you are irresponsible like me, you will lose track of them within a few months.  Make sure to save the box and all the innards, so you can not only store the pieces that you are not using at the moment, but also store the humidifier safely during the summer months – or when you are not using it.
  • The remote control is very difficult to use.  The 3 buttons make it seem easy, right?  The back is extremely difficult to get off to install the battery.  I have tried a knife and a screwdriver with zero success.  If you do get the back off, kudos to you.  Let me know how you do it, and also in what orientation you put the battery in, as there are no instructions (maybe it’s intuitive, but I don’t really understand button batteries).  In fact, I just gave up on the remote control, put it back in it’s plastic bag and placed it in a drawer.  It was too much work, and I am fine with operation directly on the unit.  I would have probably lost track of the remote control eventually (as it’s just another thing to keep track of).
  • Make sure you get the cool mist set correctly for your room.  There is no regulation of this, so you might go back to a room with a bunch of condensation on the windows.  It would be nice if it had a humidity control so it would control the humidity of the room.
  • I cannot testify to the demineralization cartridge as I have only been using the humidifier for a few weeks.  So far, it hasn’t turned black, moldy and yucky.  I do have a bunch (and I mean like 6 or 7) humidifiers that I purchased from CVS or Target downstairs collecting dust.  Those filters turned moldy and nasty within a few weeks – so nasty so I didn’t want to touch them (which is why they are in the basement collecting dust).  So far, the demineralization cartridge hasn’t done.
  • The demineralization cartridge is an extra purchase – just like in any humidifier (with the exception of the filter-less ones which I don’t think work well).  To buy, it’s $24.99.  While not expensive if it really lasts a year, you will really want to take care of the humidifier, which means cleaning it monthly and making sure the water doesn’t sit and sit.
