As a busy homeschooling mama, I know it’s hard.  It’s hard to find the time, it’s so hard to find the energy, and it was very hard getting over the guilt of putting myself first.  Because in order to do this, I had to do all three of these things.

But guess what?  I figured out that if I have time to sit and watch an episode of Grey’s Anatomy, that I had the time.  I figured out that if I could do a load of laundry, then I had the energy.  Guess what else?  If I prioritized Grey’s Anatomy, laundry, playdates and kids sports over myself, then there was something very wrong with me and my thinking.  

And that was the reason I was 300 lbs.

There are a lot of ways out there to lose weight.  Everyone is different.  As my journey unfolded, there were a lot of clues showing me a high fat lifestyle would be perfect for me.  

Clues that a high fat lifestyle would work for me


I gain 5-7 lbs. of water weight, even with a moderate carb intake (80-100g a day).  To give you some perspective, the FDA suggest 300g of carbs a day.

I was morbidly obese at 300 lbs. and 5’6″

I am African-American

I was probably insulin resistant

I was pre-diabetic

I had high blood pressure and was on medication at 40


Fat makes you fat, right?


WRONG.  It’s counterintuitive, I know.  We have been brainwashed into thinking that cutting fat out of your diet will help you lose weight, and that information is incorrect.  It’s the carbs, especially the processed sugars and foods.

The low-fat craze began in the 70’s, and all we have been doing since is getting fatter.

People, it doesn’t work – no matter how hard you try.

When you take fat out of the diet, you have to add lots of carbs and additives to make it even palatable.  Not good.  The processing will kill you and your efforts to lose weight.


The Ketogenic Lifestyle

I was able to finally reach my goal weight with a high healthy fat, low-carb diet. I was unable to do that with a low-fat lifestyle.  Do you know how difficult it is to lose the last 10-20 lbs. when you have already lost 140 lbs.? LOL.

I was able to finally have defined abs. A high-fat diet helped me to achieve this goal.

I am able to live a flavorful fulfilling life on a high-fat diet instead of preservatives, additives, and flavorless foods.

I was able to rid myself of seasonal allergies with a high-fat diet. Not so with low-fat.

My body works more efficiently, my blood pressure is phenomenal (I was on high blood pressure meds a year ago), I have more energy and am happier on a high-fat diet.

Being happy living your lifestyle, staying lean and feeling good – that means a lot.
