What a delightful group of children’s poems, for reading level first and second grade. After each poem, there is a fun open-ended activity for your child to complete to increase understanding, explore the world around them and build more solid connections. The activities can be used by all children. Younger children can do the activities after the poem is read to them and older children can go deeper into the activities.
These poems, written in the language of children, can be used during a poetry unit, for extra reading, memory work in a classical homeschool program, or as a way to explore an important topic in more detail.
All that is needed is you, your child, some coloring materials, and the book.
Besides the gentleness of the poems, some of the reasons I like this collection…
There is a multicultural set of characters. The kids in the book represent the world we live in.
The poems present an uplifting and positive voice.
The poems support multicultural beliefs.
Big bright illustrations.
Some of the ideas explored in Growing Young Spirits
Community and the importance of unity
Befriending others, even if they are different from us.
The importance of family/elders
Diversity of religion

and more!
