This year I found a goldmine when I came across Online Unit Studies. At the time, I was looking for fun small units for Christmas break. I wanted the kids to keep learning and growing, but I wanted it to be fun. I found the Christmas traditions unit from Online Unit Studies. Since it was free, I thought we would check it out.
I was pretty impressed with the presentation of the material. The premise of online unit studies is unit studies in a digital age. Everything is done online – all activities, all reading, all video, all presentation. Though this unit, I got to know Padlet – which I downloaded on my iPad – and where we keep all of our unit study work. You are able to upload notes, photos and video. It makes for a nice venue for presentation – if you child want to present his/her work, or to show what has been done for the year (aka Homeschool review)!
I was really excited about what we experienced, and was going to purchase The Christmas Around the World Unit, when the owner reached out and offered to give us The Christmas Around the World unit.
Right now, there are about 6 countries included in the unit – and more to come throughout the year. With each country, there is a through description of Christmas and Christmas traditions. There is also a great project at the end, as well as a book club.
Christmas Around the World Unit – GERMANY
We learned that Christmas Pyramids are part of the German Christmas tradition. We learned that Christmas Pyramids (I would describe them as handmade mini-carousels) spin via thermal energy (from the heat of the candle). So we made our very own heat engine quickly and easily.
The instructions were clear and concise, they were easy to make, and we had all the materials in the house already! It was a great project for the homeschooling mom like me, who doesn’t like crafts, projects or art!
Christmas Around the World Unit – GHANA
We also studied Ghana during the week. We read and watched videos about how Christmas is celebrated in Ghana. We then made a construction paper Kente Cloth. Kente is the most recognized textile from Africa. Again, the craft was easy and fun. We had all the materials – and they turned out great!

They have two FREE units for upcoming holidays. I would recommend that you try them with your kids. It’s not a waste of time. Your children will learn a lot and enjoy the units.

There is a nice project where your child will use Canva to design an MLK quote of their choice!

Here, your child will learn about the history of Valentines day. Also, he or she will have the opportunity to set up and run a fun Valentines day experiment with Sweetheart Candies!
