Math During the Summer

I’m not sure about your kids, but for mine, it’s difficult to stop math for 3 months and be able to just pick it up again.  Not only is there a process of re-learning skills that have been forgotten, but there is a process of getting back into the swing of things after being off “the schedule” for 2.5 months.

Personally, I don’t like the period of adjustment.

Plus, learning is a lifelong thing.  You just don’t learn for 9 months of the year.

This is why I love the Educents website.  There are tons of affordable/free unit studies, packets and games that will keep skills alive during the summer – without feeling “schooly”.

The Elementary Math Practice packet is one such tool.  Simply, it’s math practice for children in grades 1-5.  It’s so easily adaptable to fit your needs.  When you download it, you will see it’s 60 pages of math practice.  I wouldn’t go through it page 1-60.  I would suggest you look through it, find skills that your child has developed through the year, and periodically work on some of the pages.  If there is something that needs to be taught, there is your opportunity to refine skills and build confidence.

It’s not school.  It’s a confidence building activity.

The skill covered in this packet are as follows:

Number and Operations

(comparing numbers, writing numbers in long form, number place, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)

Operations and Algebraic Thinking

(fractions/decimals, fact families, odd/even numbers, patterns, simple algebra)

Measurement and Data Analysis

(graphs, angles, lines, perimeter, area)

I looked through the packet.  Assessed what skills he knows, what skill he has problems with (and used it as an opportunity to reteach and review), and what skills he hasn’t learned.  Then just give him 1-2 pages to do.

The Elementary Math Skills packet is a simple and easy way to keep up with math skills.  There is little prep.  It’s a print and go.  It’s not overwhelming.  It’s printed in black and white – so it’s ink saving.

At only $6, it’s an affordable way to do math without workbooks, tests and a lot of stress.

Math During the School Year

Plus, keep it during the year.  my son doesn’t have every single skill contained in the packet.  I’m keeping it throughout the skill year to supplement our existing curriculum.  You don’t need to be a homeschooler.  If your child needs extra practice, or just review anything he/she has already learned, The Elementary Math Skills packet is a simple and easy way.

  1. We continue learning during the summer too. I believe in children enjoying their childhood, but I also don’t want to give them a false sense of life. Learning never stops! Thanks for sharing the Educents pack 🙂
