What is a sleep regression?

In sleep regression, the baby usually wakes up in the middle of the night crying. The baby finds it hard to get the sleep back again for some reason. It happens during every fourth months before their first birthday. It is usual for a baby to experience this.

What causes sleep regression?

You might think that your baby is having difficulty sleeping for some reason, and the primary cause is your baby’s growth. He or she is experiencing different stages in his or her for the first few months, which is especially important.

The developing stage includes activities for his or her cognitive, social, and psychomotor skills, keeping the child from getting to sleep. Click here to know more about it.

Signs of Baby Sleep Regression

Your child may show the following symptoms that need address.

  • Your child wakes up in the middle of the night.
  • Your child is crying consistently.
  • Your child is feeling fussy when put to bed.
  • Your child is active during nighttime.
  • Your child is unresponsive in your bedtime routine.

When you find the following signs, it is a call that you have to find a way on how you can avoid this situation from occurring again.

Tips to Fix Sleep Regression in Babies

  1. Turn off the room’s light.

They are sensitive to light, exceptionally bright lights. Whenever they see it, it tells them that it is playtime or activity time. To make them go back to sleep, keep it a little dim. By doing this, the brain perceives that it is sleeping time.

  1. Keep the environment quiet.

They are also overly sensitive to sounds. They easily wake up, which is likely a sign of baby sleep regression or another similar condition. It is why it is essential to keep the room free of noise. Check the fan, aircon, or the room beside your nursery room if it creates sound.

  1. Avoid feeding too much food before sleeping time.

If already taking soft food, make sure that you let him or her take it 30 minutes or earlier before bedtime. It gives time to digest the food he or she had eaten. It makes them uneasy lying down with a full stomach.

As for moms who are breastfeeding, you can give your baby milk because your warmth comforts them enough for them to sleep.

  1. Get another place for playing.

They might mistake it as a playtime whenever you put him or her down to bed. When it is daytime, find another place where your child could play. It could be your living room. You can play on the sofa, in the rubber mat or a playhouse. Visit this link https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/15/parenting/baby/sleep-regression.html for more information about sleep regression.

  1. When sleepy, put him or her to bed.

You must help your child go to bed and introduce it to him or her how it should be. It is better that you put him immediately to the crib or bed when you see that he or she is drowsy.

It gives a chance to soothe himself or herself without you putting all the effort. Time will come that you do not have to wait that your child is fast asleep.

It is challenging on the part of the parents when their babies are experiencing baby sleep regression. It might get into their patience, but still, children need to go through it. They need the help of their mother and father. You can fix it in no time if you show support, love, and care for your child.
