Making Health Insurance Stronger for All + Important Survey

Health insurance is a tricky subject.  This post isn’t about health care for all.  It’s about making health care more transparent.  Making it user friendly – or maybe just friendly.

It’s about helping everyday people navigate “big medical.”

A few days ago, I talked to Fairos on conference call – to understand how they are striving to make health insurance more transparent for the consumer.

Fairos is a brand-new startup looking to change what’s broken about medical insurance. Their team has been working with large companies to help their employees get the cheapest rates and the highest quality care for years. In that process they realized that no one paying more for insurance than individuals like us. They believe that is wrong, and plan to do something about it.
“Big medical” has created a maze of complexity for the patient experience, including high premiums and medical bills that are intentionally confusing. Fairos plans to fight against that and hopes to see millions of people receiving the medical care they need without the crippling and confusing effects of high medical costs.
In 2015, my husband needed to have an emergency appendectomy.  He went to the local emergency room and had his procedure.  About 2 weeks later, we received a huge bill from the hospital, stating that because the doctor was “out of network,” we needed to pay the bulk of the bill out-of-pocket.
Uhhh, this was an emergency procedure.  We weren’t thinking about whether the doctor was in or out of network.  We needed to get this done right now.
It was a frustrating process.  For months, we went back and forth with the insurance company to no avail.  We were stuck with the big bill.
Where I think we needed help was with negotiation.  The insurance company was speaking one Language and we were speaking another.  We needed an intermediary who knows what to say.
Logic wasn’t working.
One of Fairos product offerings is bill negotiation.  Have you ever seen a medical bill?  The codes, the credits, the debits?  Sometimes I wonder if it’s even in English.
The Fairos team would negotiate with the insurance company on your behalf to determine what savings are possible, and where there’s opportunities to reduce your overall costs.
The doctor prescribed the surgery because my husband needed it, no if’s and’s or But’s.  We needed help in navigating the process, and that’s where Fairos could have helped us most.

Here is a survey for you.  Take it, so that you can have some input in the services that would benefit you and your family the most.
