It’s a challenge doing Ava’s hair. She wants it long and flowy like the other girls In the neighborhood. We made it so it was down, but it was so difficult for us to manage. Her hair is BIG and thick and kinky. No matter what we do, it’s not like the other girls in the neighborhood.
It’s challenging teaching her that while her hair is different from the other girls in the neighborhood, it’s just as beautiful and offers a lot of versatility!
To sort of reinforce these ideas, we are reading My Luv’s special hair. My Luv is tired of doing straightening to her hair that makes it straight and flowy. But she is concerned about cutting it and making it curly like her Dad. She is afraid that by her hair being different, her friends will no longer accept her.
With the way society is now-a-days, with Disney princesses and what’s accepted as beautiful – it is hard for a young black girl to pave her way. Luckily we have books like MyLuv’s Special Hair.
It helps seeing others like us in books and in movies who go through similar situations and have similar feelings. Your daughter will learn to appreciate her hair right along with MyLuv!
