Have you heard of Red Apple Reading?  I had not until I received the wonderful opportunity of this review.  It’s a thorough online reading program for children ages 4-9.  Once the program is complete in early 2015, it will include introductory phonics and sight words for preschool all the way through advance phonics and sight words for 3-5th grade – complete with a full range of resources to enhance the online learning, including: supplemental worksheets, flash cards, game and the like.  It is a complete early elementary phonics curriculum for children who enjoy working with the computer, playing games and online learning.

Once you log-into the program using your child’s unique username and password, you can choose which level you want your child to complete.  Right now, the program includes 3 levels.  The Learning Tree – which is phonics review.  If your child is having trouble with letters or group of letters – either recognition or sound, this is where you want to start.  You can choose the letter/s you want to work on, review the videos, play the games and take the quizzes.  You can also choose Park Planet Map 1 or Map 2.  Since everything is online, your child can log in any computer and complete the activities from where he/she left off!

In addition, Red Apple Reading gives the parents the ability to download complimentary apps through iTunes and/or Google Play – to enhance learning on the go!  These apps accompany the online program, and also offer books for your excited reader!

Whether your child plays the online game or the app, they follow the same pattern.  There is an introductory video introducing the new concept.  Then, there are 3 games where they practice their new skill.  The level of difficulty is mixed.  It’s not all easy 3-letter words!  Then there is a mini-test at the end.

Along the path, there are exams to assess their learning.

All of their progress is recorded in the parent area of Red Apple Reading.  Just log onto the parent account to view reports.  They can be printed out and presented to your county for homeschool progress – or used privately to assess areas of difficulty.

Red Apple Reading is based on Common Core.

Notes about Red Apple Reading

  • The app is not connected to the online program.  So, if your child complete progress on the go, it doesn’t update the progress on the online game (and vise versa).  We just use the app as practice.
  • The apps are not totally free – even with a membership to Red Apple Reading.  The Park Planet Maps 1 and 2 are free, and you need to long into your  Red Apple Reading account to access activities.  The reading app costs $0.99 per book or $1.99 to access all books.  The Island Adventure Maps 1 costs $3.99 and the accompanying two Island Adventure apps are free.  In either case, again, you need an Red Apple Reading Account to access activities.
  • To run smoothly, you need to download the latest version of Google Chrome or Firefox.  Even still, the program is a little clunky and slow.  We found ourselves getting impatient waiting for things to load (Yeah, we are used to the high-speed internet access) and one of the games failed to load at all.  We had to re-log in and access the game a second time.  You want to have high-speed access for this to work.  It will not work on a phone modem.
  • The preschool activities are not available until January 2015 – refer to the activities guide above.  So, right now, this is best for children who already know their letter sounds.  There is not a lot of letter sound review (even in the tree activities).

Red Apple Reading and Homeschooling

We don’t do much online learning here.  All of our curriculum is book based.  However, I see room for this – especially for kids who do really well learning online and enjoy using the computer.  I think this would be a great curriculum, especially with the abundance of activities and resources that come with the membership.  Definitely take advantage of the supplemental resources.  When you log into the parent account, look under toolbar on the left on your dashboard.  It will say resources.  Click there, and the resources can be easily downloaded.  You can also access the supplemental apps here.  From this screen you can also add accounts for additional children.
