Snowstorm Crafts – 6-Point Snowflake Tutorial With Free Printable

Did you know that all snowflakes in nature have 6 points?

Me neither.

Why, you ask?  Have we examined all snowflakes?  Well no, we haven’t, but the answer lies in hydrogen bonding.

Take a look at just how snowflakes are made!

Since we we were planning on a snowstorm this weekend, I thought it would be fun to make some 6-point snowflakes during school to decorate our windows!  I really like this craft for two reasons.

1.  I could do it :).  I am craft challenged.

2.  Just like no two snowflakes are the same, neither are our crafts.  It really leaves a lot open to imagination and experimentation.

Here is how we created our 6-point snowflakes.

1.  Take a 8.5 X 11 piece of printer paper and make a square.  There is an easy way to create a perfect square.  Just fold it over, and make sure the sides line up.

Then, cut off the excess paper.

If you open the paper, you will see, it’s a perfect square!  It’s a great way to make square manipulatives as well!!!  🙂

2.  Fold the triangle into a smaller triangle, but folding the paper in half one more time – making sure the ends line up as evenly as possible.

3.  Fold the triangle into 3rds.  This part can be a bit tricky.  Do the best that you can.  Make sure to fold the side that is open first.  The points should be crossing.

The first picture is how it should look after you fold it.  Then you flip it upside down, so the points are facing up – as I have demonstrated in the picture.

4.  Cut down at an angle.  I have demonstrated by drawing a picture and then cutting along the line.

5.  Throw away the top piece.  The bottom piece is what you want.

6.  Cut your design in your snowflake.  Create whatever you want, just don’t cut from one side to the other – or else you will destroy your snowflake.

7.  Then carefully open it up, and Voila!  Tape to the window!
