I received a copy of The ABC of Australian Animals in exchange for an honest review. However, the opinions stated herein are 100% my own.
Title: The ABC of Australian Animals
Author: Giselle Shardlow
Illustrator: Emily Gedzyk
Year of Publication: 2013
Review: I love Kids Yoga stories for the richness of the content. It fits in perfectly with our homeschool. We had the opportunity to review Sophia’s Jungle Adventures a while ago, which is a fantastic yoga adventure through Costa Rica. The ABC of Australian Animals is no different. It’s an opportunity to travel the vast outback and learn about all kinds of animals. We were really excited to review this book. The kids have been obsessed with Australia since watching (many times) the 12 most dangerous – Australia on the National Geographic Channel. While hearing about and learning about the Red Back Spider, The Great White Shark, and a variety of other interesting and scary creatures that will kill you within 30 minutes – is simply fascinating – it’s nice to learn about other exotic animals that you don’t hear about everyday. Not only do you learn about 26 amazing creatures – but the kids perform yoga poses along the way!
I asked the kids choose 6 animals (3 each) that they were interested in learning about more in-depth.
Take a look.
A note on the video. My commentary is not from the book, but from the research we did on the animals that we were interested in. The story is very good, and just tells what the animal might be doing if you were walking around and came upon it.
Yoga is a difficult skill that takes a lot of strength and endurance. My kids are just starting with this – as you have seen from the number of breaks. I tried to make them understand this – and let them know it’s okay to take breaks. Many of the poses need to practiced. I tried to give them alternative starter poses (which they refused to do). Yoga is not a one day thing. It’s an everyday thing that needs to be practiced and perfected. I think it’s such a great discipline of both mind and body. I am so grateful for Kids Yoga Stories, because unlike other picture books – this one promotes the develop of the entire self.
The ABC of Australian Animals is a great book for a child of any age and with any athletic ability. I hope you saw that there are a number of different poses, each of differing degree of difficulty. We only choose 6 poses out of the 26 + available.
I also love that Giselle suggests a number of ways that parents and children can use this book. Kids Yoga Stories is an integral part of our homeschool program and our lives. It promotes literacy, fitness, strength, agility, and family togetherness. It’s a book that truly integrates the whole self.
This is also a great activity that can be enjoyed outside (in nice weather) in the morning for relaxation before school or activities, or at night as a final routine before going to bed.
Our family loves this series of books so much, we wanted to share The ABC of Australian Animals with one family. Please enter below for your chance to win this great book.

Entered the giveaway:) It looks like a very neat book. I am a keen yoga practitioner and I feel it is great for kids to learn yoga at an early age. It is also so helpful for preventing injuries in string players, I almost feel like it has go hand in hand with violin lessons!!!

Awesome Maria! Thank you for entering. Wow, you do yoga? Such a difficult discipline. After one sessions – I’m like – had enough. Not coming back. Haha!
You know, I didn’t connect yoga and violin or any instrument. That intrigues me. Thank you for this and thanks for stopping by!

My daughter would love Sophia’s Jungle Adventure!
Yoga practice for kids may be difficult for some days, energy drinks before and after yoga practice gives some energy and kids will not feel stressed. give break after a particular pose. Good idea to give yoga practice for kids from 5th year.

I love yoga, but it’s really super hard. It takes a lot of core strength. It’s so good for you though.

Hi, Lisa.
Your post on ABC of Australian Animals caught my eye! I am an author of middle grade fantasy. My first book, The Sword of Demelza, is an epic adventure where endangered animals heroes roam the pages. The book is meant to entertain with a fast paced epic story, but it has an educational aspect in that the main characters are animals that live in Australia. The book has a glossary, which gives the reader information about the flora and fauna found within the book. I also blog about endangered animals, and my main audience is kids, although I have many adult followers. I am proud to say that the blog his being used as a teaching took in classrooms. I would love to have you visit if you get a moment. Thanks for taking the time to read, and it’s very nice to meet you!
Sincerely,
Jeanne E. Rogers, Author
