The Backyard Campout – The Ultimate Staycation

va-ca-tion (/vāˈkāSHən/)  noun.  An extended period of recreation.  Especially one spent away from home or when traveling.

Synonyms:  holiday, recess, leave

Recreation, holiday and recess are all positive and fun words.  I would love a holiday.

Certainly, I must be missing something.  Maybe it’s a good attitude – because, for me, vacations are hardly like holidays, recess or leaves.  On the contrary, they are a lot of hard work.

I have to lug 2 or now, 3 kids on an airplane.  Deal with one of them throwing up in tight quarters – as one of them will be throwing up.  Worrying so much about what to do with them on the plane, that I bring everything – including the kitchen sink – literally.  Then when we get there, it’s more hard work.  When I get home – I truly need a vacation from the vacation.

I’m all about – you don’t have 3 kids to lug around – so you come here.  It really is easier for one or 2 adults to travel to us, than to have 2 adults and 3 children travel to them.  We won’t even discuss the financial factor or traveling with 5 people.

I am all about the staycation.  I’m a 100% supporter of the staycation.  You have more time to have fun – you are in your own house – with your own things.  More importantly, you don’t have to go anywhere.

I think I’m getting cranky in my old age.

So, what a great idea for a staycation – when my hubby suggested that he take the kids and have a backyard campout!

Excellent idea!  And I don’t have to go anywhere, I don’t have to camp, and I get some quiet time to myself!

Tent Set up

I know nothing about camping.  I have never set up a tent.  We did it though.  It took some finagling, but we got it.

Looks good, yes?

Then I left for a few hours.  When I got back, I was amazed to see…

They had a fire going.  They dug a whole and put – what looked like one of the flower pots my Mom bought me – into the ground.  They were cooking hotdogs over the fire.  They had a table set out.  They were having a good time!

Hadyn cooked Graycee and me a hot dog over the fire.  It was delicious.

Then I went inside and they went into the tent.

Tent glowing in the night

Here is a picture of the tent from the house.  I love how it glows!  They had a small lantern lit.

You know, the pot that they used for the fire – it cracked as a result of the heat.  The pot was important to me – as my Mom bought it, but it didn’t even matter – surprisingly.  Not one bit  did it matter.  You know, I was really happy.  It made me happy that Dad had figured out everything (by himself).  The kids were having a great time.  It really warmed my heart.  They are making memories!

My soul is very peaceful!

I love this staycation.

Do you take staycations?  What have you done?  I would love to hear your thoughts and ideas!

  1. this is the second post I read today about a staycation, I would so love to camp out in our yard…I’m jealous. We live on a corner at a busy intersection, we would have no sleep…but maybe can camp out in our living room at night after bbqing all day! Love the pic of them at night in tent.

    • Hey Karen,

Thanks so much for stopping by – and also for your comments!

I think a camp out in the living room sounds lovely! I think the kids would have a blast. I don’t really think it’s really where it takes place. It’s the time that is spent together that’s important.

Have a great night and wonderful rest of the week.

  2. Lisa! This is a wonderful post! This is something I had been wanting to do for a while. Have a camping staycation in our backyard, unfortunately not sure if the hubs is up to it! 🙁 Kuddos to your hubby for coming up with the idea, and organizing it! 🙂

    • Hey Frances,

Thanks! Yeah, the hubs loved it – and it was his idea. He and Hadyn were supposed to do a Boy Scouts camp out but it was cancelled. So, they did this instead – and included Ava. It was some work – but it was worth it!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

I was just at your blog, and man – are we connected! We are connected on every single social media outlet available – with the exception of instagram – which, in my opinion, is a complete pain.

Thanks so much for co-hosting Modern Hippie Momma’s awesome blog hop!

  4. I love this idea – although it wouldn’t work for our six children as they already spend quite a bit of time camping out anyway! This would be a great post for my Country Kids linky and I would love you to join us! Thanks for sharing on Summer Carnival.
