Walking – It’s Good For the Planet and for You!

I was really excited about this weeks Change The World Wednesday (#CTTW) challenge.  It was an easy one.  Just Walk!

Yay!  Something that I can do – that will take little to minimal effort on my part.

How is walking good for the planet?

  1. Decreases emissions.  If you are walking, you are not driving.
  2. Walking helps reduce weight and creates fitter and healthier citizens.  It takes less energy and resources to transport and care for each person.
  3. Reduces the risk of cancer, hearth disease and diabetes.  You are not driving to the clinic, you are not buying expensive Western Medications, and you are not taking up space in hospitals and nursing homes.  Having a healthy life is worth it, wouldn’t you say?
  4. Walking helps you to have a more positive outlook and think clearer.  A clear thinkers are better decision makers!

Now that summer is here, it’s so easy to get out and a walk!

Vacations.  Airplanes leave a  huge carbon footprint.  Once you get to your destination – stay in a hotel that’s close to everything.  Take a walk or hire a bike to get to all of most of your destinations.   When we went to Disneyland, we walked everywhere.  Not only is it good for the body – we got a lot of invaluable family time!  It was really great!  No car rental, no cab fees – just walk!

Gym.  Why pay for expensive gym fees during the summer?  Walking is the best exercise we can do for our bodies and our minds.  It’s low impact aerobics that is good on the joints.  There is no need for added electricity used by treadmills, ellipticals, etc. or added financial resources for membership fees

Walk your neighborhood.  Walk your neighborhood and discover new things and meet new people.  How long have you lived in your house?   Have you met the neighbors?  We walk all the time – and we know everyone by name.  It’s a great way to get out and be social!  No money needed.  Discover the gems around you.  Discovering new things around you is the best staycation!

 

Other tips

Water Bottle.  Go out and buy an expensive reusable water bottle.  It’s worth it.

Don’t Like Walking?  Ride a bike.  Rollerblade.  Ride a skateboard.  Even though it takes water, energy and resources to make these things, they are still a much better alternative.  They get you up, out and moving.  The carbon footprint is much less than using your car.

Be An Excellent Example.  If others see you doing it, they are more likely to do it!

Enjoy the Process.  It’s not the destination that’s important.  Enjoy the process, how you feel, and the people that you meet.  That’s what makes this change worth it!  Ask friends, family and neighbors to join you on your walk.

  1. I love all the benefits you’ve listed … especially meeting neighbors and finding the hidden gems in our own areas. I used to belong to a walking group, Volksport, and it was such fun. One sees an area differently when walking. We noticed plants and how people decorate their yards … we even found some hidden gardens. And the architecture of the buildings is so interesting, especially if the area is well established. These days our favorite walk is along a river in our area … it’s so peaceful and beautiful. This morning, just after the fog cleared, we saw a family of ducks swimming against the current. It was such a perfect way to start our day! thank you for this post and your great ideas!

    • Wonderful! Isn’t it great to just take the time to take in life’s beautiful wonders. It’s those things that you miss in the hustle and bustle of life that makes life worth living. I just love the smell of the air.

  3. I love walking around the neigborhood and main street in our town. It’s great exercise and what a great way to spend time with family and enjoy the weather. You make a great point, save the planet and walk /bike when youcan.
