Camp Warner Bros. Steven Universe “Crystal Gem” Candy Treat!

Camp is so much fun for the kids!  This week, we watched Steven Universe!  Have you heard of it?  After so many harrowing adventures, Steven and the Gems are ready to celebrate how far they’ve come with a movie musical! Little do they know they’re about to face their worst enemy yet.

It’s musical fun for the entire family!

To go along with this amazing movie, we made “Crystal Gem” candy, which the kids (especially Grayson), loved.

To make the candy, you need the following items.

  • 3 cups sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • Food color of choice
  • mason jar
  • Piece of string
  • paper clip
  • pencil
  • spoon for mixing

The steps are simple, but because it requires heat, camp supervision is imperative!

The Science behind the “Crystal Gem” Candy Treat

As time passes (and the solution cools), the water will slowly evaporate from the solution. As the water evaporates, the solution will become more saturated with sugar. The sugar molecules will collect on the string, and the candy crystals will grow molecule by molecule!

For Extra Science Fun!

Try making two jars of candy. In the first jar – seed your “Crystal Gem” Candy by rolling your string in water and sugar. In the second jar do not seed your string with sugar before growing. Determine if using seed sugar crystals changes the growth rate of your “Crystal Gem” Candy!
Have you ever made rock candy for your kids? How did they like it?
