Choosing the Best Giveaway for your Blog

Choosing the best #giveaways for your blog #bloggingtips #BB100

Being a new blogger – choosing the right giveaways to participate in – was one of the things I had to figure out myself.  It takes a lot of effort to promote a giveaway, you don’t want to waste your time.   Through trail and error, I figured it out.

Some questions you might want to ask yourself when considering participating or hosting a giveaway…

  1. What is my ultimate goal for holding this giveaway?
  2. What do I want to accomplish through this giveaway?  Networking possibilities?  Cash?  Targeted Followers?  Just grow numbers?
  3. What do I hope to obtain through this giveaway?  How is this giveaway going to enhance my blog? Will I be able to collaborate/network with other bloggers and grow my sphere?
  4. What is the ultimate goal of your blog?  Monetization? Outlet?  Creative Space?
  5. Is the work going to be worth the effort and promotion?

These are important questions.  For my babywearing giveaway that I held in late November/Early December 2013, here were the answers to these questions…

  1. I firmly believe that babywearing is the best choice for baby and mama.  I want to bring more awareness to the benefits of  babywearing – not only in the “hippy/crunchy” mama community (as they already know) but to mammas in general.
  2. I hoped to gain more followers.  I firmly believe in natural parenting – that it benefits my children greatly.  I want people to read my blog who are similarly minded.
  3. I will be able to network with companies that make items that “natural parents” want and need, and I will gain followers who are “natural parent” minded.
  4. Getting help from other bloggers – I grew existing friendships and forged new friendships.

So, for me – this was a very worth while and lucrative venture.  The work was worth it to me.

When considering a giveaway, you should think about…

  1. Why are you blogging?  For money, for friends, why?
  2. What are you passionate about?  If you are passionate about what you are giving away – it will mean something.
  3. Think about the focus of your blog.  Maybe it’s 1 or 2 or 3 things.
  4. Think about how this giveaway will enhance/grow your blog.
  5. Think about whether you are willing to exert the work necessary to make the giveaway successful.
  6. Think about what the “real outcomes” are worth the work. Will the outcomes get you closer to your goal?

The Real Outcomes of Giveaways

Just because you host or hold a giveaway and your social media numbers increase, doesn’t mean you will gain thousands of readers.  It doesn’t work that way.  For me, it’s about getting my name out there, forging honest friendships, and networking.  If you think you are going to hold a giveaway and gain hundreds of readers – you might be greatly disappointed. No matter what you do, blogging takes time. I don’t care what anybody else says, you have to remain consistent and determined. When thinking about a giveaway, ask the question – is it going to help you get closer to your goal – and be honest about the answer.

The Reasons I don’t do Cash Giveaways

Everybody wants cash.  You need cash to live.  Hippy Mama’s want cash, foodies want cash, lifestyle bloggers want cash, the store cashier wants cash – everybody wants cash.  However, everybody doesn’t want to read my blog.  I want targeted followers – people I think will be interested in the things that I love to talk about.    So, I review and giveaway things that matter to me.

  • Books
  • Learning items
  • Babywearing items
  • Natural parenting items

I do participate in book blasts, which have a cash component.  For me, I feel that since the underlying message supports getting good books into the hands of children that want/need them – it’ an okay compromise.  Cash is “here today, gone tomorrow” but books – they last forever.

Choosing the Best Giveaway for your blog

I hope I have gotten across that it’s important to choose giveaways that are more targeted to your blog.  And that ambiguous followers are not worth their weight in gold.  I would rather have a smaller network of targeted followers – because ultimately that’s what I crave.  I want to turn the followers into readers.

  1. I haven’t hosted any giveaways, but I have promoted some. You’re right about targeting the giveaways to your blog niche. If you don’t, your new followers are not going to stay. There’s no way that helps in the long run.

    • Hey Julie,

Yeah. It’s really not worth it. It’s actually a waste of time if you want targeted followers. If you are just looking for numbers – I guess it would be okay. But I don’t think numbers really mean anything without readers.

I hope you are having a great start to the weekend!

  4. I have not done a giveaway yet. These are all great things to think about and process. I am a Tupperware Consultant. I am considering giving away some Tupperware for my first giveaway. My whole purpose for this would be be to go through process with no pressure before doing it “for real”. It would also allow me to try out the tools used for giveaways etc. Do you think this is a productive idea? Are there cons to it I haven’t thought about? Thanks for covering this topic.

    • I think it is a good idea. If you want to spread the news about your business. Since you are new (I think you said) it might help to put the giveaway on a few other blogs. Offer the bloggers links in the giveaway for promotion. This way, more eyes will see the giveaway which will bring more attention to your business. Thanks so much for reading, Machelle. I appreciate it! I hope you have a wonderful Easter!

I’m a baby wearing, breastfeeding, cloth diapering, kinda green mother of two. I find your articles push me further in my considerations or simply encourage me in what I am already doing.
