Fitness Tips for Busy At-Home Moms

Many moms opt to stay at home to supervise and care for her growing kids. But as many people say, a mother’s work is never done. From the moment she wakes up until her bedtime (often late in the evening), a mom has a long list of tasks. With the never-ending demand for her time, it is seldom that a busy stay-at-home mom can afford to relax, let alone keep fit.

But keeping fit is necessary especially if you are a working mom. You need the energy and strength to take on all the tasks that you have to do each day. You need to keep your energy level up to perform your duty as a mother and at the same time, attend to your job, if you are working from home.

In order to keep fit, you need a combination of exercise, the right kind of food and snacks that will supply your daily nutrition needs, keep your energy level steady and allow you to maintain your ideal weight.

It is important to incorporate a fitness routine into your busy schedule each week for your health, happiness and well-being. You do not have to start all out to have a good workout. You can start small and build your stamina for a full fitness routine later. The important thing is to plan, creating a workable schedule so your time for working out is part of your daily timetable. If you’re at a loss of what to do, here are a few tips.

  1. Find the right exercise that will fit your schedule and fitness level. There are several sites where you can find on-demand workouts or free videos of exercise routines that are created for busy moms. Burst training like HIIT requires only a short time to complete but will help you burn calories faster.

  1. If you are choosing healthy lunch or dinner for your children, do remember that you need the same healthy meals as well. Same goes for snacks. Choose healthy snacks such as fresh fruits, berries, vegetables, nuts and natural fruit juice that do not have added sugars.

  1. Get enough sleep. You do not have to spend all your time doing household chores non-stop or spending long hours in front of your computer. Divide your time wisely. If the children are napping, have a short nap as well. Aim to have at least eight hours of sleep at night. You’ll find that you will have enough energy to last the day and you’ll be more productive as well.

  1. Keep your body moving. What this means is to do some small exercises while you’re in front of your computer, while cooking or while washing dishes or clothes. You can do toe raises, toe points and toe curls to strengthen your feet. Firm up your buns with buttock clenches while seated. Do as many repetitions as you can. Rotate your ankles clockwise and counterclockwise to strengthen them.

Relieve arm and shoulder fatigue with arm stretches. Stretch your right arm towards your left side and hold it in the crook of your left arm. Feel the stretch for a few seconds and repeat on the other side.

  1. Get enough fresh air and sunshine. Exercising does not mean doing routine workouts. You and your children will also benefit from playing outdoors when the weather is fine. You can play tag, soccer, basketball or any other sport that will allow you to burn calories while enjoying each other’s company.

You are the only one accountable for your fitness. Do not use being busy as a reason not to exercise. If you are motivated, you’ll find the time to do everything that needs to be done for the day, including having the time to exercise. Keeping fit will help you cope with stress, make you more productive and set a good example for your children.
