Home Testosterone Test Kits: When to Use One?

It’s simple. Testosterone is the backbone to masculinity and all things related to it. When boys go through adolescence, their levels of this hormone increase thirty times. This makes them into men. When the process ends, the levels of testosterone start to decrease by a small amount. This means that usually, these levels will be one per cent lower after a man turns thirty.

Men’s sex drives, muscle mass, bones, mood, body and pubic hair, and quality of life depend on this hormone. But, it can also affect women. They produce it in their ovaries but in much smaller doses than men. A lack of this hormone in men will reduce strength, body hair and muscle mass. On the other hand, it will increase these traits in women. Of course, like anything in our bodies, there are normal and abnormal levels.

In men, a normal range is between 300 and 1000 nanograms in a deciliter. In women, the normal range is between 15 and 70 nanograms. Being above or below these limits could be a sign of a health risk. For men, the most prevalent problem is low testosterone levels. On the other hand, for women, the problem is an abundance of it.

Low testosterone levels

The scientific term for this is hypogonadism. In men, this can cause a decreased sex drive, erectile dysfunction, and overall tiredness. Most commonly, this comes as a result of aging. If this isn’t the case, then there could be damage in the cells that produce the hormone. If you had an accident, it also could be a factor. Testicular cancer and the treatments for it also play an essential role in the low levels of testosterone.

High testosterone Levels

This is called congenital adrenal hyperplasia. This affects both men and women. If someone is born with this condition, it can result in one of two things. Boys could be born with an abnormally large penis, and girls with abnormal genitals as well. Afterwards, boys could go on to have very deep voices, and the girls would develop strong facial hair. It can be diagnosed early and cause stunned growth, but some measures can be taken.

Testosterone Testing

There are two ways that you can check your testosterone levels. The first one is to go to a doctor and have a physical exam. This will usually happen in the morning because that’s when the hormone levels are the highest. Before the test, make sure to stop taking medications that could affect your results in any way. Always notify your doctor of what you meds you’re currently using.

The most common way they test you is by taking a blood test. First, your arm will be cleaned, and then they’ll tie a plastic band over it. After that, with a needle, they’ll draw a little bit of blood and send it to a lab for testing. But, if you are scared of this process, there is an alternative.

Home Test Kits

This type of test doesn’t include blood or any uncomfortable methods. These tests are saliva-based. This is also a lot easier and much less invasive than taking a blood test. Some studies have reported that this type of testing is more accurate and more preferable. This is because it causes less stress in patients and it’s as reliable as other bodily fluids.

A home test kit will ask of you to take a few saliva samples and mail them to a lab. How many samples you take depends on the product you’re using. The results will usually come in a few days, up to a few weeks. This is a great method to test your levels before you see a doctor. Read more about them here.

The results are in

Depending on the results, you might have to make a few lifestyle changes. If the results come in that say you have a low amount of testosterone, you might have to undergo a replacement therapy. This is called TRT, and it will help by giving you a gel, a skin patch, or an injection that will replace the hormone that is missing.

Exercise and health improvements are always recommended. They help with balancing testosterone levels. Additionally, a few dietary changes could also help in this process. However, if you are using steroids or similar medications, you might have to stop taking them, or use an alternative.

A few final words

If you notice any symptoms in your body that suggest that something terrible going on, it’s better to take a test. It can help you find out whether any health issues, underlying conditions or choices are affecting your testosterone levels. In many cases, they vary because of age, exercise and diet. But, it’s always better to be sure about it.
