How to get your Workout In With Kids in Tow

It’s difficult to take care of yourself when you are busy taking care of kids.  I understand.  With every moment of your day scheduled, and the free moments spent with dealing with meltdowns, meals, breaking up fights, work, and cleaning – there is no possible way to add one more thing.

We all have the same 24-hours in a day.  And while I understand that it’s difficult and it’s draining, if we don’t take care of ourselves, how are we to take care of our children?  How are we able to be role models and teach our children to take care of themselves?  We are their first teachers.  We are the ones that they look to for guidance.

Plus, it’s not really fair to blame our kids for our lack of self-care.  Where there is a will, there is a way.  Eating right and exercise, fundamental to our health, and the health of our children.  It’s not about being selfish, it’s about being responsible.  It’s very much about seeing ourselves as important and worth it.

I am a strong advocate of taking the time to take care of myself.  I don’t get my exercise by walking up the stairs while carrying the laundry basket.  That’s a chore.  I take at least 30 minutes a day for myself, for my health and for my sanity.

Here is how I lost 80 lbs and have been able to maintain the weight loss for a few years.

  • Schedule it!  Schedule the workout and make it important.  My workout is non-negotiable.  No matter what, I get it in.  If the day is really busy, I get up early, or I do it late.  If the kids need to miss something – or I need to miss something – so be it.  I have missed writing many a blog post due to making my workout.  It is number 1 on my priority list.  It has been since day 1 and it still is.
  • Working out being a homeschooling mom.  Since I homeschool, I sometimes get the kids going on their school work, and do my workout while they are doing independent work.
  • Set a tone.  I set the tone that my health is utmost importance and that my workout time is mine.  Unless the house is on fire, or there is an emergency, nobody bothers me.  Questions can wait 30 minutes.  The baby sits in the bouncy seat while I workout.
  • Meals.  Meals seem like they take up most of the time.  My meals are very simple.  I prepare chicken on Sunday and freeze.  Everybody eats the same thing, and if they don’t want it they can make something else themselves.
  • Show the kids that health is a way of life.  I very frequently involve the children in my working out.  They have been extensively involved in the workout programs.  Both my son and daughter have done P90x3 with me.  My son even did the doubles workout modification with me!  It’s a lot of fun when everyone is involved – and teaches some great lessons.

As I read this over, I sound like a sleestack.  I know.  3 years ago, I would say – man, she is harsh.  But to change my life completely, to not be 300 lbs with high blood pressure and on the verge of being diabetic, I needed to put myself first in this scenario.  I needed to invest in myself more – and in everything else less. I needed to invest in the proper foods which would give me the proper nutrition.  I needed to make time to workout.  I needed time to work on myself.

I enjoy including my children in my exercise programs.  I take great pride in having them there and participating.

It has done great things for me, and for them.

  1. That is awesome! I used to get my workout in every morning and in the last year I’ve slacked off… and gained 10 pounds back! I have a 10 year old who would like to maintain his weight so we’ve started working out together and have managed 4 workouts this week! So we’re getting there.
