Poverty in the US – A Follow Fundraiser

The Change The World Wednesday (CTWW) challenge with Reduced Footprints was – for lack of a better word – challenging.  We were supposed to spend only $1.50 per day per person on food.  The purpose is to bring attention to the growing  problem of poverty in the US.

I spent all day Wednesday fretting.  How am I supposed to do this?  I don’t even have a garden for goodness sakes.  Needless to say, this week was a CTWW fail.  However, it did get me thinking – a lot.

In the wealthiest nation in the world, there are 14.5% of Americans living below the poverty line.  That is nearly 49 million Americans (16.5 million being children).  That’s abhorrent.  Source: Household Food Security in the United States, 2010. U.S. Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service, September 2011. (Table 1A, Table 1B)

What makes me even more sick?  In this house, we have 5 computers and 3 cars (granted one of them is 25 years old).

This year, the poverty guidelines are as follows

Persons in Family/Household Poverty Guideline
1 $11,490
2 $15,510
3 $19,530
4 $23,550
For families/households with more than 4 persons

add $4,020 for each additional person

Taken from the Department of Health and Human Services

I am not sure how one finds money to buy healthy food on this type of salary.

I don’t really have any answers.

However, over the last week, I have received multiple promptings from the spirit.  One came this morning, when I got an email from Year Round Giving – about follow fundraisers.

I’m going to follow this prompting, because I can certainly do better for my family and my community.  Plus, I have some giveaways going and will have a few big ones in the next month – so this seems like the ideal time to do it!

So, here is my pledge

For every Facebook and Google plus like – I will donate 1 can of food to the local food bank (up to 200 cans).

For every RSS and Newsletter subscription I receive – I will donate 2 cans of food to the local food bank. (up to 200 cans).

This Follow Fundraiser will run until the 14th of June (which is when my giveaway and giveaways will end).

Lot’s of opportunity for likes – and lots of opportunities for food for those in our community who are in need.

After the fundraising period, the kids and I will collect/buy the food ourselves and bring it to the food bank.

  1. I’m so sorry that you spent the day fretting. But you know … all changes start with awareness and you did that so there was no “fail”. In fact, you took this challenge and turned it into something so good for the community. I say … total success! Bravo!!

  2. I understand the fretting. It does get overwhelming when you think how anyone even begins to survive on such little money. I love the follow fundraiser idea and the promptings from the spirit.

  4. Hi! Thanks for the nice comment on my breast feeding post. Granted your comment was about a week ago and I am just now getting around to responding to comments :-/ Thanks for this post. I can’t believe how low the poverty numbers are. I really don’t know how families on that low of an income afford to pay rent/mortgage, put gas in a car or pay for public transportation, pay household bills (electric, heat, etc), and buy food. Sad 🙁 What a great fund raising idea you are doing! I was already following on FB and Bloglovin’, but now following on G+ as well.
